Karunanidhi, the chief of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The first Uzhavar santhai was inaugurated in Madurai. The objective of the scheme is to promote direct contact between farmers and consumers. Through which farmers can get full profit from the products which they produce without middlemen or brokers. The opposition Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) came to power stalled the scheme. In 2006, after DMK come to the power and revived it. In 2011, ADMK formed the government but continue the scheme.
